Day 109- buildOn and Voting

I won my NCAA basketball bracket last year and celebrated with a blog post (and some  totrash talking).  I didn't do any brackets this year because we were in Mexico when everything was announced.  As much as I love joining the fun and winning, I was definitely okay with the situation.

Since UConn won the tournament this year, I found a fabulous organization in Connecticut to make my donation to.  There's your connection.  The charity is called builOn, and here's what they do:

buildOn is a non-profit organization that empowers primarily urban U.S. high school students through in-class and intensive afterschool youth service programs. In addition to tremendous contributions of community service in their own cities and neighborhoods, buildOn youth actually build schools and bring literacy to children and adults in developing countries around the world. buildOn programs are designed to build confidence and real-world capabilities in American youth while also empowering communities world-wide in Africa, South America, and South East Asia to overcome the cycle of illiteracy, poverty and low expectations by opening the door to education.

I do not take for granted the women who struggled in order for me to live with the rights that I do.  One right in particular that I exercised today was my right to vote.  My profession is undergoing many changes right now and being presented with all kinds of challenges.  It was more crucial than ever to make my voice heard in our school board elections.

Every time I leave the voting "booth" (ours are more like tables with partitions), I can't help but to smile and give a little holler to all the women who made that experience possible for me.  Holler, ladies!

Thank you, voting, you made my day.
